Check the wheel speed sensor. It may have somehow gotten damaged. Inspect the wire going from the inner fender well down to the sensor (in the knuckle). Damage happens sometimes when doing suspension/brake work and not watching out for the wheel speed sensor… Also, they can be a bit pricey at part stores ($85-140), so I usually get them online (least expensive source)…

i agree with what he says, wires commonly go around that area for ABS systems, if you are working on your brakes or doing ball joints, tie rod ends or suspension components, sometimes a pickle fork as in your case, or another tool can slip and smack the sensor or break the wire… causing your system too go “hay, i am getting incorrect or no signal from so and so sensor…”

when working on cars i have noticed just as much as sensors fail the wiring going too them get broken or corroded and cause the failure, especially if the car gets worked on and they get damaged during the working process!

Can you describe the popping noise? Does it sound like the ABS is being applied when you are braking? ABS should be felt as pulsating (the pump takes over the fluid management and pumps and releases several times per second). If one of the wheel sensors is out of whack, it can cause the ABS to apply at low speeds while braking on perfectly dry, flat pavement…. This occurs because the ABS computer gets a different reading from the speed at the tire. Hence, if 3 wheels say the car is going 7mph and one wheel says 12 mph then the computer thinks one of the tires is spinning and applies the ABS.

More detailed information would help us, help you.
