Hey guys Changing out one of the rear calipers on my 2006 E-250 work van. One of my friends and I were talking about the job he said that before i work on any ABS brake system i should pull my abs relay to disable the system to prevent damage to the abs. I have changed about 4 or 5 calipers on cars with ABS and have never done this step. A couple of online vids also recommend doing this before the caliper change and bleed. I just wanted see if this is a common practice that you guys do or started doing now that ABS is everywhere!!!

      Thanks

      Dave

A lot of people advise it but personally I never have and have never had any problems usually the best thing to do is just disconnect the negative terminal and wait 90 seconds disconnecting the ABS relay could cause a short as there could still be power held in a capacitor somewhere .

never had to disconnect anything. If resetting the caliper
piston.Open the bleed screw while resetting. other than that
        its pretty straight forward. 🙂

Same here. Ford rear calipers usually require a “winder” to retrack the piston.

They always says stuff like that. Disconnect this or that before performing this procedure. Like why do I need to disconnect the battery to change a wiper blade???? (exaggeration, but still, you get the point)
