      Hello,

I am the owner of a 1999 GMC Yukon. It has 98K miles. I bought it about a month ago, and just started to hear this noise recently.

      Situation:
      – Make a left or right turn from a stop
      – Once you are straightened out, and at about 15MPH you will hear a “grind” it kind of sounds like a train on a railroad track. It is not very loud.
      – It sounds like its in the front end.

I originally thought it was the brakes. A real simple fix. I took it to a shop to have the brakes done. Shop did rotors plus pads. And took care of the drum brakes in the back. No change in the sound.

I then took it to a shop and the owner came along for a ride. As soon as he heard it, he said it was my muffler and to take it to a muffler shop. I did. I took it to a muffler shop, and they said it sounds like the brakes.

A bit confused on what to do now. Does this sound like an exhaust issue?

A youtube video can be seen here:
It happens exactly at the five second mark.

I couldn’t hear anything over the exhaust. For the symptoms you’re describing in text though, I’d start at the front wheel bearings and evaluate the rest of the front suspension while I had the wheels off the ground.

Sorry – It is right at five seconds. And is gone by 6 seconds.

I couldn’t get a good video because my phone picks up too much background noise.

Bearings are all good, and the rest of the front suspension has been gone through and or replaced recently. Front end is in great shape. Recently had an alignment done by a very good shop, and they were looking for any parts to replace.

The only thing that has a little play is the pitman but it was very minor play.

That high pitched squeal at 5 seconds ? Sounds like rubber … rubbing. 😛 Slipping belt? Check tires for rub marks ? Examine rubber in the area you hear it from. That kind of noise is maddening, best luck to you!

Sounds like the splash shield rubbing on the brake rotor.

Hmm.. I’ve never thought it was a rubber noise before.. Slipping belt may be possible, one time when I did an alternator it said I had a slipping belt. Tires look fine. I’m thinking I am going to drop it off a shop and pay them an hour of labor to try to find it – because I am missing it. All ball joints are good, new in the last 6 months.

Splash shield is what I thought, but I can’t see where it is rubbing at.

Still haven’t been able to solve this.

It hasn’t gotten worse, but it hasn’t gotten better. One thing more I did find out is: In the middle of the grind if I take my foot off the gas, it will stop.

Exhaust hitting on something? I don’t know..

                    !!
