My mom’s 02 4Runner has been ‘consuming’ coolant for quite sometime. It wasn’t until recently, I saw evidence of a leaking on the top of the radiator. The leak is small but I guess under pressure, it sprays out from the seams. I looked at the service manual for the vehicle and it showed that it can be repair but I don’t have the patience for it. Plus the process is long and tedious. So I decided on just replacing the radiator. I remember when the vehicle was new, the coolant was red. Where I live, the only way to obtain it is at the dealer. This was when I knew nothing about cars. Along the line, the coolant was switched to the 50/50 green premix coolant. The vehicle ran fine. I’m going to assume that the green coolant probably cause some damage to the radiator. Now when I do get the radiator, along with one other item, here is what I’m wondering: Is it imperative that I use the red coolant instead of the green? And if I do have to use the red coolant, do I have to perform a flush to get the green coolant out?

Some people have different opinions on it. The shop I work at we use green for everything. Every single vehicle we do any work on the coolant system we put green in it. Haven’t had a comeback in years. Not one that I know of. I could ask my boss if he has ever had a comeback but I’m almost sure he hasn’t and he’s been using green forever. It works and it’s cheap. Just my 2 cents

And I seriously seriously doubt the green coolant damaged the radiator.

Those radiators leak at the seams all the time. As far as coolant we always use what the manufacture puts in them.
