A/C Problems

Have a problem child in the shop… came in with no refrigerant, hooked up the machine vacuumed it down and put the correct amount of refrigerant in, with a uv dye inject. Started the vehicle and the compressor kicks on and off rapidly, problem is when it does kick on for the short second that it does, the a/c fan wont turn on and the pressures sky rocket to over 150 on low side and maxed out 450 on high side gauge. I haven’t verified if the cooling fan works. It was supposed to be a simple last minute recharge job on saturday before we closed. So now im trying to arm myself before i work on this vehicle. Im thinking the compressor is bad or the fan…of course in theory if the fan is bad the car would overheat, I havent verified if the fan works without the ac on. My question is if the compressor is cycling for a quick second, is it not enough to get the a/c fan to engage? As in does the compressor need to run longer then a few seconds for the fan to turn on, or should the ac fan kick on the second the compressor fires? Any advice? my specialty is in emission/driveability repair and not a/c (yet). here in las vegas its always over 100-105 degrees.

I guess I should say its a 2007 Kia Rondo 2.4. Has a electric Fan.

as soon as the ac button is pressed the fan should come on.
The compressor is cycling on head pressure switch.Thats why
its shutting down.I would check the fan circuit and fuses.

either test for 12v at the fan plug with a meter or
            put 12v to the fan.

High pressure could be caused by a stuck txv. Also can be an overcharge. Did you weigh the amount of refrigerant going in? Also get a good look at the condenser and ensure it is clean. The high pressures are shutting off the compressor as a safety…

Super late update but the problem was the fan connector, i pulled it apart and it was melted inside. Took two seconds to figure out. Its funny because i have had three more vehicles with the exact same problem come in since this post. Hyundai/kia sells the updated male/female connector that you solder in. So its a common problem i have been seeing on the suv’s.

Also I should mention that the compressor was leaking and there is an update for this too, it consists of a updated compressor and updated low and high side lines so you have to buy it as a kit.

Super high pressure really can’t be a compressor problem, it really can’t overachieve. More likely an overcharge so there is liquid coming out of the evaporator, or a blockage someplace, maybe in a filter or in the thin tubing?

Interesting solution. I’m glad you were able to figure that out. Thanks for the tips on the common problems with that vehicle.
