Well its hard to say without using a manifold gauge set to read the pressures but my first guess would be that the high side pressure is getting too high and is causing the high pressure cutoff switch to shut the compressor off to prevent damage. Check for any obstructions/debris around the condenser/radiator and check for adequate air flow. See if both cooling fans come on.

Excellent post and a great place to start, without a manifold gauge set it’s very difficult to know what’s going on in the system. You may take it somewhere to get it diagnosed and perhaps do the repair yourself if you’re looking to save some money.
