A/C FAILURE

The air conditioning in my 97 Town Car all of a sudden quit working. Thr clutch was making a rattling noise and I could not get any cold air through the vents so I immediately parked it. I opened the system and looked at the orifice tube and it had only 2 small pieces of debris in it. 1 tiny sliver of metal and 1 tiny piece of a black material. I’m planning to replace just the compressor, accumulator, and orifice tube. My question is – would this be considered a catastrophic failure? I am hoping to replace just these 3 items, evacuate and recharge. My understanding is if you have a catastrophic failure, everything firewall forward must be replaced. Any recommendation as to how to proceed?
      Thanks

all a/c compressor failures are catastrophic failures.

at minimum, change the orifice tube with your new compressor.

entire a/c system flush is recommended.

A/C seriously? The A/C in my Daewoo has never worked since the day it was new. Just roll your windows down or open your sunroof if you have one.

Most dependable car made. Surely more well built than a Honda or other car 13yo and its not all rotted out with rust like any chevy or ford of the same age.

I have a feeling that the phrase “catastrophic failure” is defined in either your owners manual if you’ve got one, or on the Lincoln web-site. At any rate, it’s a 1997 and even if you’re the original owner, the factory warranty that would cover such failures likely lapsed some time ago.

OTOH, any individual warranty on the part itself or an extended warranty, factory or third-party, that you may have purchased should define that term as well. It doesn’t need multiple part failure or multi-system failure as a result of a single part or component failure to be considered catastrophic. Your single compressor might just be enough, but whether it’s covered by some manufacturer is a different story.

Lastly, I should mention that different states may require manufacturers and even some sellers of various products, cars and their components, etc., to supplement their coverage through implied warranties like “fitness for a particular purpose” and require additional consumer protection rights of coverage beyond the scope of the manufacturer written warranty.
