A/C (cooling fan) problem

I have a 2003 Cavalier. Every time when I am at the stop light with the A/C on it will blow out hot air, and it sounds like that it is depressurizing. When I am driving there is cool air. The A/C clutch works, because when it is turned on you can hear it, and there is enough r134a in the system. Please help, thank you.

If the cooling fan is not working, then how does the cooling fan turn on with the A/C running?

I don’t have jumper wires or PP3 or have the money for PP3, so I will test it with jumper wires tomorrow after I buy the jumper wires.

does the car have 1 fan or 2? You’ll need to figure out why the fan isnt coming on. Does the cooling fan ever come on? Like if you let it sit and idle long enough the cooling fan should kick on

you can always make some jumper wires too. Just need some wire and maybe an inline fuse holder and some alligator clips and you’re good to go!

There is your problem. You need to find out why it is not coming on. Does the fan work at all? If not, replace it. Is the relay, if there is one, bad?

Use an old extension chord if you have one and cut the ends off and attach alligator clips big ones for connecting to battery and small ones for connecting to test objects. Insulate the small ones so they can’t make contact with each other.

Oh yeah when the A/C is on the temp goes up, and when driving it stabilizes.

The fan not working causes the temp to go up when stopped. When moving there is natural air flow to keep temp down. Personally I would not be running the A/C until you get that fan working. Your engine is not being cooled properly. And the running of the A/C is making the overheating worse

What about when at stop the A/C blows hot air, is this in connection with the cooling fan?

                            Yes!

Yes both cooling fans should come on with the AC. I too check for power and ground at the fan connector first as a common failure point would be the fan motor itself and if it’s getting power and ground and it’s still not working then it’s likely the motor is bad. Me I would bust out my Power probe (not trying to cause tool envy) but a simple test light would also show if the connector is getting the power and ground that it needs. An easy check would be to check all the fuses, sometimes cooling fans blow fuses and that’s an easy fix.

I check the relay by swapping a known good relay and did not work. I also looked at the fuse, it is also good. I have am going to school for auto service ad will diagnose it on Tuesday since I have insuffucient tool at home. Will post back when diagnosed.

Got bored today and bought some wires with alligator clips and tested the cooling fan. Not being surprised it does not work. I will replace the motor Tuesday at school.
