Hello people hope you guys are doing well. I have a 99 Pontiac Montana with a bad tranny. I had it replace with a rebuilt one from a shop like 2 years ago. It lasted for about a year and half and then stopped working properly. I took my van from California to Phoenix and on the way there the tranny over heated about 3 hours into the drive. When it overheated I couldn’t get overhaul drive to kick in it would only give me 3rd gear or sometimes I couldn’t go past 20 MPH. The tranny had a separate cooler for its self. In addition to that it bangs from first gear into second. I do have a code that relates to the tranny its P1870 Transaxle component slipping (4T60-E) I was thinking of taking out the burnt fluid and adding new fluid with Lucas and new filter or should I take the time to open it up and fix it? Open to ideas as well thanks guys and take care.

First question I would ask myself, is a 1999 worth the cost of a replacement transmission. Secondly you might get lucky by replacing the fluid and filter but I doubt it.
sounds like whoever rebuilt it didn’t do a very good job. transmissions should really only be rebuilt by transmission specialists for that very reason. now in terms of your particular vehicle personally I would not replace the transmission in that vehicle as they aren’t worth all that much and the trannys honestly aren’t that great to begin with. but if you really like the car and wanna fix it then your best bet would be to get a refurbished transmission. those ones really work the best if any.
