This is mostly random and have not figured out a pattern of when and why it happens really but the car will run like a champ 25% +/- of the time some days i dont even really notice it others its really bad. it seems to lack a little power even on its good days but its at LOW rpm say 1000-3000 range it will buck and spit and sputter and sound like a light back fire BUT it really doesn’t feel like a complete miss and that meaning i pulled the plug wires off 1 by 1 to try and locate the cylinder that was missing i came up with none! (NO CEL for miss either) bad days it will just give one thump every say 30 sec at 45+mph just like its missing a beat lol. When it starts “missing” If i push it into the floor it will perk right back up and put you in your seat. I’ve changed this all in order it was done Fuel Pump and filter, Air Filter, Spark Plugs (Autolite DBL Platinum) and wires, Alternator, PCV, The normal maintenance stuff was done just for that and shortly after the plugs where done this problem arose. With the CEL saying P0420 (cat) so bye bye cats (all 3) ((Yes im getting a new main cat)) NO change but code gone NEW CEL as of today P1151 (PCV) so i went and spent the 5bucks and got a pcv installed no change. Checked motor 3 times now for vacuum leak (Once a month ago, 2 weeks, today while putting PCV in) fixed one and no more to be found. ive check all connections to sensors and plugs to make sure i didn’t knock any off cant find any. Im beginning to get stumped here! Thanks in advance! :woohoo:
Edit: It idles fine 100% of the time and will sit in gear with the brake on with no problems its on above idle and below 3000ish. it also does it alot when going up hills small or big BUT has and will do it on flat and even downgrades. The higher the rpm the less it does it! CEL was blinking (never seen it do it before) coming up my hill last night and it was running bad BUT there is NO misfire code?? Checked CEL it today where i seen the PCV code (only code)!

I would still like this thread to be open here for at least a few more days just to be sure BUT THANK YOU for your help in all of this!

Ok great. Will label this as a ignition voltage leak. keep us posted. 🙂

today i had about an 8th of a tank or so (30 miles to E) i put 3 gal in it and got 30 miles out of it with 15-20 being high way! Very bad!! ive done alot of the poor mpg threat suggests and still have very bad mpg! consisering the quote below do you think a tps could be the cause and what is (If there is) a better way to test???

ALSO i was looking at TPS readings today it was 14.9 and i pushed it to the floor got 92 or 94 and let it up for it to read 16.6 this time push it down and let it up to 14.9 and agian to 16.6 and agian and agian where it stayed at 16.6? Whats up with that?

My 2.3 Ranger never has tps readings below 14%. Your readings are in that same range. I don’t think the Throttle Position sensor is bad. Your scan tool readings seem to show it is working.

It sounds like you just went from running lean to running rich, with poor mpg. Does the exhaust smell like unburnt fuel now? You might want to check the injectors(are they clicking) and check fuel pressure (30-40 psi). How does the upstream Oxygen sensor look on the scan tool now? is it switching like it should?

I can get back to you on those answers tom. Car is from dead COLD ONLY having a slight delay in starting meaning simply instead of its usual crank rooom its takes not only alittle long but struggles for a sec like crank roo roo roooom not only that today i did some serious high way driving and it seems at times i had to go alot deeper into the throttle alot of times to hold my 75 after alittle bit it would almost catch back up with it self and i had to let up and it would hold and then again at points it almost seemed like it couldnt hold its speed in any position! and YES i do smell gas at times but i was certain it was me rolling the tank seal when i changed the pump agian ill look into my readings tom! Thanks

Just another thought: fuel gauges aren’t that accurate. I’m not sure your fuel mileage is that bad. You might want to drive it more to see if it improves. Fill to fill mileage calculations have given me the best results.
Just hoping we have an outlier data point, rather than a mechanical problem.
I’ve had good results checking fuel trims and proclaiming all is well if the long term fuel trims were near zero.
