I just bought a 99 SLK 230 and the hood release is not working. I tried pulling the hood release handle under the dash, but it was very hard to pull and the cable connection broke at the handle. I could still pull the cable without the it being connected to the handle, but the hood would still not release. The only way to get the hood open was to have another person push down on the hood while the hood release cable was being pulled.

I’ve lubricated the hood latch and adjusted the height casters near both fenders, but the hood will still not open when I try to pull the hood release cable. Are there any other adjustments on the hood latch? Thanks…

With the hood open will the latch mechanism move freely when the cable is pulled?

If the latch moves freely with the hood open then the latch itself probably needs to be adjusted.

Allot of the time they will get knocked out of adjustment from someone dropping the hood to close it which with a properly adjusted hood you should be able to close it with only hand pressure.

Never drop a hood it can cause things to break like headlight housings grill attachments and other parts.

You should be able to used a large screwdriver to operate the mechanism whit the hood open that’s how I free’d up the one on my old ranger. Keep working it back and forth while hitting it with some good penetrating oil.

If that doesn’t work it could be a bad cable “rusty/pinched” or maybe the latch has been changed or removed for some reason and the latch it self is too low. The holes that the mounting bolts go through should be slotted not all are.
