99 Maxima 5 speed – I bought the car last year – no check engine light on but I found 4 emission related codes from OBDII reader. all 4 were emission related (evap leak, cylinder misfiring, O2 sensor not working,…) but check engine light was not on. When I put the key and turn, I see all lights on (including check engine light) so I know that the light bulb is not taken out. So question is how do I fix this? I think the the used car dealer did something to disable the check engine light but I am not sure how to fix this.

It is probably fine…i am assuming you have no driveability issues…you probably are looking at history…pending codes wont set a light either….clear the codes and you should be fine

It wasn’t fine. I reset the code and drove about 100 miles and read the same code with ODBII scanner again. All 4 codes showed up again. I had to replace ignition coils, charcoal canister and rear O2 sensor, and knock sensor. Then I was able to clear the code and keep it off.

The problem is if a new code is thrown I am not going to know until I connect the ODBII scanner because the CEL light would not go on.

Are the new ones pending codes?

After clearing, I don see any new or pending code showing – but it does bulb up the gas if I pump too fast.

The light should come on in the future, it would be a strange problem indeed if it did not and still stored codes in the ECU. I think what you had was pending codes that did not trip the light. Either way I’d just monitor the situation for now.

Technically it is possible for the light to not come on and everything else still work. After all, it is just a computer that provides a ground on the bulb. When you use your scanner it should tell whether the CEL is on or off and if you want to reset it along with the codes that are set. If the scanner shows the CEL on and the lamp test has it on during key-on there are only two possibilities.

Either the PCM is bad or some hack wired the CEL to another bulb on the dash to fool a prospective buyer.

Have you tried to reset the codes? Try to reset the codes if you haven’t and I’ve actually noticed this a lot on Nissans including my own but the codes were pending so they didn’t set off the light which I think on your car is pending too.
