I have a 1999 jeep Cherokee sport v6 4.0L with an automatic transmission and 155,000 miles. I know it just started leaking oil because it just started leaving oil marks on the ground in my garage. which it just so happens i just changed the oil and notice a large amount of fresh oil residue while i was under there. The oil filter area (which my guess is it is just from oil spilling when i changed it)

and around where it looks like the oil pan meets the transmission

Could hitting a huge speed bump cause this? i was driving home at night and in my neighborhood there is the stupid huge speed bump and i forgot it was there. i hit it going about 30 and i was so scared i broke something. THis happened a few days before i changed my oil and notice all the oil leakage.
So, i guess my questions are what can i use to clean up the oil to help locate the leak and what normally starts leaking in a 1999 jeep Cherokee sport at 155,000 miles.

My second question is about the transfer case and the binding of the front wheels.
MY jeep has part-time and full-time 4WD, It was in part-time the entire time, down high ways and on dry pavement. and now in 2WD the front wheels bind when i turn sharply. there never used to do that.
So could going on a high way in part-time damage my transfer case in anyway? and what can i do about the binding in 2WD.

As for the oil leak are you using synthetic oil? If so, don’t. In fact I just shot a video on this very thing that will be out in the next couple of weeks.

If you’re using regular oil of the correct viscosity then clean the area with brake cleaner. You can find this at your auto parts store. Once the area is clean you can use dye in the oil OR you can spray leak detection compound on the suspected area to locate the source.

As for the 4WD it may not be your transfer case. It’s more likely to be the U joints on the front axles. Check them for looseness and let us know what you find.
