99 grand am 2.4 ltr Changed water pump and now can’t even rotate crank shaft by hand

I’m afraid that your chain may have jumped when the guides were not installed causing piston to valve contact. You may need to take the timing cover back off and inspect the timing marks.

I agree that the timing chain probably jumped time and that your best bet to find out is to tear back into it. There could be bent valves etc.. but you might have got lucky and it is shutting the valves way too soon and building more compression than the

I would check the mechanical timing of the engine first.

+1 It sounds like you’re going to have to get back in there and recheck everything and put it back in time if it’s out.

was definatly out of time – took out the spark plugs and turned the engine over a few times, relieved the rest of the pressure – followed the proceedure out of haynes manual to get it in time. It is turning over smooth no noise from the valves and can tur

If you bent valves there won’t be enough compression to start the engine.
