As I was completing a water pump and coolant hose replacement job on my truck, I had a question.

When I cranked clockwise on the bolt holding the belt tensioner to remove the serpentine belt it moved ok to loosen, but then it just stayed there. Isn’t it supposed to spring back? When putting it all back together I moved the tensioner back to its original position. The truck starts fine and runs like it did before, but that tensioner just doesn’t seem right to me.

Is it time to replace it or do you have to manually move some of them to the point of tension?

Normally you don’t use the bolt to loose the serpentine. You have a peace of metal use as a lever dedicated to the job. If you see the belt moving sideways and you did not have enough tension on the belt. To see if you don’t have enought tension you will smell burning rubber eared the strap hissing. and also you need to replace the belt tensioner spring.

If the tensioner on your ram did not return by its self then it is time for a new one. would be bad to throw the belt while driving.

Purchased a Gates belt tensioner and pulley. I had to remove two screws from the coil bracket to get to the nut and loosen the assembly. Of course I had removed the belt already. Pulled the old one off, tightented the new one and reattached the coil bracket. Quite a difference with the SPRING in this new tensioner. Put the belt back on and started the truck. Life is good and it sure was nice to do a quick 10 minute job. This was quite a bit easier than the water pump.

Thanks to all for you advice
