So i have a 99 dodge neon sport 2.0l dohc. The car started overheating, boiling water steaming out the radiator overflow, blowing out white smoke out the tail pipe. So right off the start i figured the head gasket was bad. So i took it uppon my self like always to fix the problem. I bought a entire set of gaskets from the head up, thermostat, radiator cap, and a new waterpump. I took the engine apart from the head up and the water pump and cleaned everyrhing with degreaser. A few of the chambers on the head where clogged pretty bad so i poked out the buildup and vacumed out every clog then washed the head in miniral spirits and a presure gun and put the valves and camshafts back in after cleaning and reapplying oil to everything. Replaced all gaskets that came with the kit and put it all back togother. New oil and coolant started it up ran fine went to drive about 8 minuets later car was doing the same things it was before the repair minus the white smoke… my thoughts are possible clogged heater core but then i wouldnt be getting hot air from the vents and i do so thats rulled out.. maybe a clogged cat?.. air in the system?.. idk im lost now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Possibly a clogged radiator, or a collapsing lower rad hose.

Sorry i forgot to mention that in the process of the repair i drained the coolant out the drain plug on the bottom so i would imagine if it was clogged then it wouldnt have drained so i think i can rule that out possibly. Haven’t checked the lower rad hose for any collapsing but ill be sure to do that when i get home as well as checking for air in the system.

The radiator can drain and still be sufficiently clogged to restrict flow. It’s especially suspect since you were burning coolant, as leaky gaskets allow combustion contaminates into the cooling system. Also make sure the fins on the outside of the radiator aren’t mucked up and air can freely flow through them.
Check that both cooling fans turn on when the engine reaches temp. Also, make sure the thermostat’s in correctly. I’ve had them go cockeye in the thermostat housing when I thought it had properly ‘snapped’ in.
Could well be trapped air – I know my Neon needed to be burped quite thoroughly after being drained. Hopefully that’s the case.

            Good luck!
