Hello, I’m trying to diagnose a problem with my aunt’s 99 Dodge Avenger. It’s got the V6, automatic, and has 200k+ miles. The problem is while driving down the road, the car will just lose power. The RPM’s drop down to idle, and hitting the gas pedal does absolutely nothing. After about 10-15 seconds, the car will start responding again, and will be fine for the rest of the trip. Usually only happens once on a trip, and will not do it again unless the car has sat off for awhile.

Is the check engine light on. You may want to scan it anyway
to see if anything is there. more in this article.

Update, car actually stalled out today, but immediately restarted. Checked codes, there was a code for the MAF sensor, but the car has shown that code for years with no trouble.

Try unplugging the sensor to see if the problem goes away. Also check for air leaks between the sensor and the engine. Any leaks here can cause issues. There’s more information in the article that College man posted for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Update on the situation. Car stalled out and would not restart Friday night, so had it towed home. Went to the local garage where I have all my work done, and explained the situation to them. They looked it up on their database, and suggested that we clean the throttle body. Did that, and the car still would stall out. Next they said to change the crank position sensor, as it was a common fix to the problem we were having. Went and bought the part, replaced the sensor, and the car has ran fine since. Old sensor had alot of carbon buildup on it, so I don’t know if that’s why it was causing trouble or not.

Sounds like it might be fixed. Thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum. Keep us posted if the problem comes back.
