      Hi,

I have a question regarding an oil leak on my 99 civic ex with 157K miles. There is an oil leak on the drivers side of the engine that is dripping right off of the bottom of the timing belt cover. I took the top cover off and the timing belt looks great so I’m a little thrown off. There appears to be no leaning on the seal of the oil pan as well. According to the research I’ve done i think it’s related to the Oil Pump, but I’d like to get a second opinion before i go and drop the oil pan and replace the pump/pump seal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Thanks!

Well, oil pump have bearing like the water pump and power steering pump. So, maybe is just a soft steal gasket that rust but oil leak come from the center of the pulley and glide on the pulley wheel before they drop on the ground. So to be sure It’s the loose seal bearing you need to clean the oil pump whir brake cleaner and turn It. By doing so you will heard noise , feel turn resistance and loose wheel pulley.

couple possibilities. cam shaft seal, oil pump seal.
pick up some dye and put it in the oil to try and
          pin point the leak.

That’d be awesome if it is just a steel gasket! Thanks for idea! I really appreciate it!

Thanks, i Checked the Cam Shaft seal and it looks fine. The timing belt is in great condition so I don’t think it’s happening near the belt.

Thanks for the help! I’ve read a lot about the dye. I’m going to try to look a lot more tomorrow and if i can’t find it i’m going to get the dye. Thanks!

That’s a very common leak. It’s not the oil pump however, it’s likely to be the oil pan as that is the most common cause. I’d replace the oil pan gasket with an OE gasket and recheck for the leak.

Is that an aluminum or steal pan?

That’s what I’ve been finding out. That’s great news! Really? Wow. I cleaned whole area super well the other day and am keeping a close eye on everything. It appears to be a bigger visual mess than physical right now. I haven’t lost enough oil to notice on the dipstick so far. Sounds great though! Thanks for the help! I knew I came to the right place.

                  It’s a steal oil pan.

Thanks for all the videos and help you provide the community! The effort and time you put into everything is greatly appreciated! I’ve always been wrenching things since i was a kid, but it’s great to see everything done by a professional before i start wrenching away!

Since you say is coming from the left side I think 99 civic has crankshaft pulley on the left side. Check the crankshaft seal by the pulley when those leak it very hard to find the leak until you take the pulley out and check out..
