      Hello folks,

I have a 1999 2 door honda civic completely stock D16Y8 1.6 liter engine with a total mileage of 124K miles aprox.

Recently I have been experiencing a sudden loss of power while accelerating from a static position or even when accelerating from low speeds. I am having a hard time explaining so please bear with me..

It feels like the fuel feed cuts off and the car goes silent while still rolling, then starts coughing, jerking and stuttering until it goes back to normal. Been happening more frequently as time passes and is also affecting the gas mileage.

These were the first things I went for:
-Replaced Spark plugs (NGK of course)
-Replaced Spark plug cables (NGK of course)
      -Replaced Air filter (OEM)
      -Replaced Fuel filter (OEM)
-Have been running a whole bottle of injector cleaning additive per each 5 gallons(of the best gasoline available) I put in.

*Edit 10/02/2014 – Replacing suspicious parts
      -Replaced whole distributor.(OEM)
-Replaced IACV, tried 2 other IACVs from other vehicles. (OEM)
      -Replaced fuel pump. (OEM)
-Ran more injector cleaning additives in fuel tank (tried all brands available).
-Checked for air bubbles in cooling system (none found).
-Checked and adjusted timing belt. (as per the mechanic it was slightly loose however not yet ready for replacement, timing belt was adjusted accordingly).

*Edit 10/07/2014 – More tests and adjustments
-Power balance test -> passed, same power band drop on all cylinders
-Voltage leak test -> passed, no sparks or audible snaps
-Vacuum leak test (carburetor cleaner) -> passed, no RPM change anywhere
-Ignition and engine timing were slightly off, they were corrected accordingly. All belts still brand new.

Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

Have you scanned the computer to see if there are any codes stored?

Does it stutter at all if you rev it up in neutral without moving it?

You may need to get your hands on a scanner that can show you what is happening in real time, and then take it for a ride, and see what your sensors are doing. On the surface, this sounds to me like the kind of stuff that happens when a sensor is on it’s last legs.

              Hi Tomh,

Sometimes stutters at idle as well as when accelerating in neutral..but most of the times it happens when I am moving in gear.

Following that line of thought, which sensor would you suspect is having the issues?

I am really not familiar at all with operating scanners or advanced tools, but what type of scanner should I look for that will work on my Honda D16?

I have not checked that…how do I perform that check?

You will need a timing light and jump the connector under the dashboard on the passenger side.

                    Good explanation here

Do you have the D16Y7 or the D16Y8?

If your not sure how to tell, here is how:

That’s a nice motor. The D16Y7 crack at the exhaust manifold, which causes lots of strange problems. D16Y8, they moved the catalytic converter, under the car, so they are less prone to the exhaust manifold cracking.

Honda’s don’t normally have fuel delivery issues. I would suspect the problem is most likely in the ignition system. That said, Honda’s aren’t very fond of aftermarket ignition components so I’d recommend OE or Beck Arnley parts if you need to go there. More info on solving performance problems like this here.

Today I’ve got a very disturbing update for you guys,

I had to get the car to my mechanic because I could not figure out the issue and did not have the tools or confidence to try to take anything apart…

He discovered that the pulley(or flywheel..not very good at part names in english) attached at the end of the crankshaft were welded together instead of being attached with the lock they were supposed to have..they were just welded together. According to the mechanic this caused the pistons to be out of alignment which also messed up the timing.

Piston rings and bearings are trashed as well as the crankshaft and the pulley it goes attached to.

He presented me with 3 options:
-Whole new engine (most elegant choice but most expensive)
-Lower half of the block (less elegant, still out of reach for me and not available in local junkers or stores anyway..)
-Crankshaft, pulley, rings, bearings and all the other parts and put it all together ( the very least elegant but somewhat affordable..)

From here i dont know what else to say except that i’ve had this car for only 5 months and all these problems have really bummed me out completely. (last month i had to replace the whole trans..). I will choose the third option since that is the only one I can afford and I really need the car ready as soon as possible.

This might NOT be the reason behind the original problem (power loss/stuttering/jerking/coughing at low speeds) but the mec adviced get this sorted out as soon as possible since it is way more critical than the original issue i reported. As of now I am not happy with the car but at this point the only way out is keep going IN. He is going to start working on it tomorrow. More updates as I get news.

                                thanks

The only 3 places where I could find a whole engine they would charge the equivalent to around 650 dollars. I am still moving forward with the option of rebuilding mine..the mec is getting the parts today from various places.

We are under the impression this car was being used for track purposes at some point in its life..the crankshaft and pulley were welded together as part of what we think was a tuning procedure (welding 2 parts together still looks very cheap to me), the broken pulley was not stock but an aftermarket variable one. We also think the somewhat off timing was purposely set that way, it also has a straight pipe exhaust configuration with 3” muffler tip with no catalytic. I should have noticed before just by seeing the race spec falken slicks (non street tires) it came with..
