just bought this car about a week ago everything works great. then check engine light comes on theonly thing i can see that is wrong is the temp is running high like 212 on highway 222 in city so i let it cool down check coolant level and its green uggh. so the question is if i flush and refill with dexcool should that solve the problem or doi need to go ahead and check for head gasket leaks wich these 4.6 northstars have a common problem with. any help is appriciated

I would use an OBD II sensor to read the code of the check engine light. I would also go ahead and check for leaks in the system as well as the head gasket.

I would start with the basics first and have the CEL scanned and see what the issues are.

As for the coolant, it may have been exchanged previously.

          Keep us posted.

Northstar engines have a problem much worse than just head gaskets, what really happens is the head bolts strip and pull right out of the block. To repair it you need to remove the heads and drill out all the holes in the block and install rethread kits.

Lets not go there yet however. The information on how to not only track down an overheat condition but also how to test for combustion gasses in the coolant are in this video. Keep in mind the FIRST step is always to purge any air from the cooling system, many overheat conditions are the result of air in the cooling system so don’t overlook this.
