I tried looking this up but I can only find ‘dash lights only’ and ‘nothing happens’ results. I am fairly new to maintaining and servicing my own vehicle but so far have replaced my fly wheel and timing belts as well as various other smaller parts and fixes. When I shredded my timing belt it was a quick and easy replacement but I went back in for a new water pump this time. After a few hours I was back off the blocks and tried starting the engine, but only the starter is turning. Fuel pump is activating, all electronics and air settings are fine, no bad fuses etc. Stripped it all the way back to the exposed water pump once more and then back to the ground, same result, only the starter is spinning, not even a flooded no start situation. I had driven the car hours before swapping the pump just fine, can I get some pointers if anyone’s got an idea of what could have happened please? 99 Honda Accord LX 2.3 manual 4cyl.

When you say only the starter is spinning; do you actually mean only the starter motor? Is it engaging the flywheel and rotating the engine too?

Just the starter and all the belts very slowly turn. There is spark and gas as well. I’ve actually never encountered something I saw this morning though on a vehicle, just on lawnmowers. There’s gas vapor coming out of my air intake. Normally I just clean out the filter on a mower then run it without the filter for awhile. I’d try on the car but there’s no combustion. There we’re no odd noses and all the belts spin with no resistance by hand so there can’t be a bent valve can there?

Valve damage wouldn’t necessarily cause an engine to stop rotating. If I were you, I’d start with a compression test.
You can rule out internal damage if you’re making good numbers.
Be sure to charge the battery beforehand and keep the gas pedal to the floor during the test.

I don’t have time to test compression until two days from now, I did post on other forums as well and that’s also the response I’m getting, but I don’t know how I could have blown the gasket or bent any valves as I marked the belts and recentered counter clockwise like normal. I did the timing again today for the third time, same result. Gas vapor coming out of the air intake now though that I just noticed. I have to research how to tinker with the carb if it even most likely has one, I’ve only had experience rebuilding two strokes before this car…

99 accord what engine? F-23? if you have gas vapor coming out of the intake pull the intake off to see what cylinder its coming out of. If its just 1 cylinder you could possibly have a bent valve. Easy route take the valve cover off and make sure the rockers are all moving about the same its not a sure thing, but if you see 1 rocker not moving then youll know 1 of the valves are toast. Also make sure the distributor hasnt rotated. I think on those its 12 degrees Plus or Minus on the timing you can get from adjusting the distributor.

As a last ditch effort, you can remove all the bolts that hold the distributor down and rotate it past the bolt holes. If you can get the motor to start beyond the normal bolt holes, then you may be a tooth off. Worth a shot IMO.
