Hello, all. Ran into this problem about a year ago, where the HVAC selector knob occasionally got stuck, and I had to hem and haw at the knob to get it to work freely again. Well, eventually the cable mechanism that drives the diverter under the dash broke. Below is a video of how to get to it and remove it.
To get to the suspect part, you’ll need:
– an 8mm socket for the four bolts for the knee panel
– a T-50 Torx bit to remove the four bolts that secure the drivers’ seat, (believe me, it makes it WAY easier.)
– a broad screwdriver, or a stiff putty knife to pry out the center panel
– the replacement cable mechanism, Ford Part #YH-1624. RockAuto.com is where I got mine, less than $40, including shipping.
– lots of patience. The video below was taken after I figured it out and took it all apart, but you should be able to follow along OK, if not, feel free to post a question. Reassembly is just as easy.
***NOTE*** This same HVAC setup is found in the Ford Transit Connect minivans, although getting to it is probably different.
