I was hoping Eric can help me with this…
I recently acquired a ’98 Sienna and aware of the tapping noise. I thought it was the timing tensioner so I decided to change the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idlers all the way through valve covers and cam/crank seals.
When I was done, I was disappointed because the noise is still there.
I think the noise is coming from the rear valve cover near the firewall, I am assuming it could be needing a valve adjustment? What do you guys think?
Here is a video, note that it does not have a check engine light on.

It does sound like valve noise to me as well. Damaged main bearings tend to change noise a bit under load.
Here’s a rather nice guide on how to adjust the valves on your 1MZ FE
Good luck and cheers
July 10, 2013 at 10:08 pm #535986Ah, my good friend… The V6 3.0 Sludge monster with waste spark ignition….
I do hear the noise, but wish you could have hit the gas a little bit to hear it better and what it is doing under increased RPMs. It seemed like the engine was fairly noisy.
The IAC is on the left side of the plenum right above the PCV valve and the EGR valve is on the right side of the plenum… Take a good look at them and the PCV hose.
Also take a look at the rear exhaust manifold where it meets in the y pipe… Those go bad at the flex joint…. Also I have seen these burn through Exhaust donuts…
I save the worst for last… Like I said earlier, the 3.0 is a sludge monster… If you change oil at 3k you will be fine, but Toyota never said that and they had MAJOR issues because of this……. There could be an issue with the valves… A quick check would be to see how nasty your front valves are (easier to remove the front valve cover and should be in relatively the same condition as the rear)…..take a pic for us… these can be fun!….. These 3.0’s can be really effected with sludge and varnish and get oil starved (I have seen the CAMs in these engines break due to lack of lubrication).

July 10, 2013 at 10:11 pm #535987sounds like a valve adjustment. make sure its not
an exhaust manifold leak.I don’t think it is but….
how many miles?July 10, 2013 at 10:15 pm #535988Karl,
I did took off the 2 valve covers because I just wanted to change the valve cover gaskets and cam seals. Guess what? I was so happy that the camshafts, shims, and all that area is super clean! No sludge build up except mild build up on the valve covers which i already removed with ease.
I can take another video with accelarating th throttle

July 10, 2013 at 10:25 pm #535994How does the car drive? Sounds like the engine was ran low on oil at one point and some damage happened. If the car drives good I wouldn’t worry about it. I had a customer with an old Nissan Extera that sounded worst but but was driving fine for the last three years.
July 10, 2013 at 10:31 pm #535997I have seen these engines running strong at 250k plus miles… As long as they had their oil changed regularly they are good engines….

Runs great shifts great no vibration, no hesitation. And this is before I did the tune up. What I did so far: timing belt, all idlers, water pump, all seals, tensioner, drive belts. Coolant flush, new oe spark plugs and wires. New oe thermostat, oil change, a/t filter, a/t oil change…brake fluid flush, and new wipers lol.
New video comin right up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWLMaLy6bvkSo what about exhaust leak?
July 10, 2013 at 10:50 pm #536009In those 2 videos, the noise sounds louder because of the my phone’s microphone, should be a little less louder.
So you guys are saying, it is fine to drive it like that? I wonder thicker oil such as 15-40 would help?
July 10, 2013 at 11:01 pm #536014Please don’t go to thicker oil to try and quiet things down.
Either do the valve adjustment or drive it. It should not cause
an issue unless you feel power loss and or oil consumption.July 10, 2013 at 11:02 pm #536016Yeah, that is much better… It does sound like valves….but my hearing is for crap…. Just check the Y pipe to be 100 percent sure about it not being an exhaust leak… Also, I have had to replace exhaust manifolds in these that were noisy as hell…
I would not recommend driving it around like that more than you have to….And since you have enough mechanical knowledge to remove the plenum, I would check the valve clearance.
