Hey everybody! I’m looking at purchasing a 98 s10 with the 2.2 liter 4 cylinder motor and automatic transmission. The guy told me he hadn’t had it for a week and the timing chain broke. I’m of course buying it as-is and I’ve been hearing that this engine will not be damaged if the timing chain breaks. Something about it being a non-interference engine. I was wondering if this was true and if you all had any tips on replacing the timing chain. His bottom dollar is $1000. I figured even if I had to put an engine in it I would just have around $1700 in it. If the timing chain was indeed all that was wrong then that would be great. Anything I should check for while I’m looking at it?

I don’t think it will be that difficult a job. Getting the crank pulley off might be the hardest part. I suppose what you really want to know is why the chain broke in the first place. If it has high mileage that’s one thing, but if it’s got low miles there might be some other issue.

Yeah, it takes a lot of miles to wear out a timing chain. Also, it makes me wonder why the owner wouldn’t have the chain replaced if that is all it needs. That is a simple fix and he would have a running truck to sell.

I have decided not to buy the truck. If the body was in better shape I would risk having to replace the engine but it looks like it’s been wrecked in the front end. Thanks everybody for your feedback. And thanks a lot Eric for checking these forums and replying. I love watching your videos. I had actually watched all of the parts of the Sonoma replacement. I think I’ve watched almost all of your YouTube videos.
