New to the site. Been working on my truck and came across Erics videos, extremely helpful. I always appreciate how he explains things in easy to understand terms , not way over my head doctor language. I do have a question or situation really? Driving truck last week had a really bad sound, truck changed in power, idle, sound, everything. Made it home to see what it could be, well, here is the video i posted so i wont have to explain everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=731TygPKnlA . I changed the tensioner and guides, got it all back together. It turns over but has a loud ticking or knocking sound, runs pretty ruff but holds idle. Watched your compression video and went out to buy a comprssion tester. Did that and found my #2 cyc has zero compression. 1,3,4 all are 164-180 dry , and 185-195 wet. Going to attempt a leak down test on that cyc. but i have to go buy the right attachment. the compression tool hose with fitting i have is proprietary and wont fit into my compression hose female end. boooooo 🙁 . Should i start to cry now, look at buying new truck, or spend whats left of my money on the lottery and hope i win big….????????? thanks all. Again greatly appreciate gentleman like Eric who take there own time or feel that itch to help others in there field of expertise. Thanks again.
I can’t remember for sure but the distributor should have a slot with a bolt through it where it bolts to the head. That’s where you adjust the timing.

Those compression numbers are off a tad. I would expect to see 140 to 160 PSI at least on that truck. Are you sure you have the timing chains lined up correctly as it only takes one tooth or chain link to kill performance.

If you have a vacuum gauge it might help a diagnosis somewhat.
Wysteck, you nailed it bud. I took valve cover and upper timing chain over off. Put engine at TDC, and found that my Intake and Exhaust cams were off by one link. Both of them , off by one link. I could have sworn i had it right, but it didnt hurt to much to take a second look.
New Compression Numbers:(Dry)
#1 cylinder – 180
#2 cylinder -179
#3 cylinder -181
#4 cylinder – 180

Kind of nervous about doing the wet test
Was just pumped that i got my timing down, and compression numbers up. Took it for a test drive even and no loss of power. Feels good. Most of that slight shutter of the engine is gone too. Ill get that wet test done tomorrow or if to busy, then this weekend. But thanks a bunch fellas.

I’m happy you got it fixed. You have more determination and patients than most experienced people that I know, including myself.

As long as you’re satisfied with the way it performs now, I wouldn’t worry bout doing a wet test.

Drive it and be proud your accomplishment.

Thanks guys. I have a few small issues to fix before i can start to drive it everyday again. Small coolant leaks, some new hoses and clamps. I have to redo the upper timing chain cover and valve cover caskets. I half assed it back together just to do the compression test after getting the timing down. So a HUGE thanks to all you guys for the help and the nudges in the right directions, for all your knowledge and experience. I really do appreciate you guys taking the time to respond to my issues. So again a HUGE thanks. If i could shake your hands i would. Thanks – Wysetech, College Man, Toyotakarl, Bluesnut, richiepearce,grg88,619Diofan, and of course Eric for the replies and for creating this outlet. Your good people.
Now i get to move on to my other vehicle issues. banana:

Was gonna say the same thing.

Yep, it was bent valves. I had two bent valves on my intake side, cylinder #2. When my tensioner and guildes gave out, main timing chain slipped and “Bammmm” piston/valve kissed. My trucks way of saying,”guess what buddy, your gonna learn how to rebuild your head”. Was a great learning experience.

That’s quite a journey. Glad you got it sorted and learned some new tricks. Thanks for keeping us up to date and for using the ETCG forum. Given the length of this thread, I would ask that you start a new one for the other issues you’re having. This will make nice with our database.
