New to the site. Been working on my truck and came across Erics videos, extremely helpful. I always appreciate how he explains things in easy to understand terms , not way over my head doctor language. I do have a question or situation really? Driving truck last week had a really bad sound, truck changed in power, idle, sound, everything. Made it home to see what it could be, well, here is the video i posted so i wont have to explain everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=731TygPKnlA . I changed the tensioner and guides, got it all back together. It turns over but has a loud ticking or knocking sound, runs pretty ruff but holds idle. Watched your compression video and went out to buy a comprssion tester. Did that and found my #2 cyc has zero compression. 1,3,4 all are 164-180 dry , and 185-195 wet. Going to attempt a leak down test on that cyc. but i have to go buy the right attachment. the compression tool hose with fitting i have is proprietary and wont fit into my compression hose female end. boooooo 🙁 . Should i start to cry now, look at buying new truck, or spend whats left of my money on the lottery and hope i win big….????????? thanks all. Again greatly appreciate gentleman like Eric who take there own time or feel that itch to help others in there field of expertise. Thanks again.

Great video. And It appears you did find the source of the noise you had but the part that concerns me is the fact that you have no compression on # 2 cylinder. The chain problem should have no effect on that.

I would want to be sure of the compression result before I spent money to repair what you can see. If the cylinder has no compression at all there is obviously a problem inside that cylinder that you can’t see.

You might want to remove the cylinder head for inspection before you go any further.

I would say as you have zero compression on number 2 it would most likely have a bent valve or two.
When the tensioner let go the chain is most likely to have jumped teeth.
Providing you have checked timing etc and all is good and your compression test was carried out correctly. I would take rocker cover off, remove plugs and turn over by hand, hopefully you will be able to see what the valve buckets on number 2 are doing. Are they coming up as far as the others etc. If you are unable to check using this method then I am afraid the camshafts will have to come out so you can see that way. By the sounds of things it is pointing to a head off job.

you are correct, the chain did let go. after installing the tensioner and guides i noticed the chain had moved. So i read up on getting TDC , watched alot of videos, im pretty confident i got int back to were it needed to be. The lower timing chain had moved 19 links when i had counted. I did record after i installed the guides and got the TDC lined up. Im posting a video here with me doing the compression testing. If the timing is off maybe someone will catch it in that video and point it out. thanks again guys.

okay sorry for the delay. here is my video of compression testing. after i uploaded it i saw i spelled compression wrong, to late.. i tried to upload straight to this website but it didnt go for some reason so i went to youtube instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ2OMkjffZY
Now im gonna attempt a leak down test. took guage off and modified it with a 1/8″ threaded nipple, 1/8″ to 1/4″ bushing, then male compressor fitting. ill record and post if i get a chance today. thanks again guys, any feed back is greatly appreciated.

do you think the bent or broken valve was do to the tensioner and guides giving out ? or was it a problem that was slowing building up and not noticed by me?
good part with doing all this work and research is i might become a certified Nissan mechanic after this. lol… well as long as its a 98 Nissan Frontier. thks again guys. ill record and post after pulling the head.

I suspect there is a bent valve on # 2 cylinder. The tapping you hear is from too much valve clearance.

i got the valve cover off, got the upper timing chain cover off, took out upper timing chain tensioner. And now im stuck on the intake cameshaft sprocket bolt. i cant get it loose. gonna try again tomorrow. need more leverage. thks

Wait until you get the head off to see what the problem is before we can answer that question.

A quick follow up on my Frontier. Took the upper heat shield off exhaust manifold. Busted two bolts in the process. booo. gonna pick up some penetrating oil on the way home tomorrow. Noticed all the nuts holding the exhaust manifold on are pretty rusted , and i have a big crack in the manifold between cy.2 and 3. Not sure if the crack is big enough that it will be in two pieces but will find out tomorrow when i get it off. What could cause it to crack or after this happened did it cause my other isssues? just keep finding more issues as i dig.

vibration can cause them to crack. That would not cause the timing chain issues, I believe this was caused by the tensioner giving up, possibly due to poor maintenance ie.. lack of regular oil changes, running low oil etc.
The tension for the chain is provided by oil pressure to the tensioner
