Hello…
I’m brand new to this forum and I’ve run into a problem with my wife’s civic all of a sudden….NEED HELP!

wow,,,started off with bad #3, but look at the compression on #1 & 2….way too low…the blinking CEL,,not good…extreme caution….you sure throw alot of $ at it…did you buy recommended parts for honda=NGK,,etc,,,you should have kept the OE wires,,,checked the #3 wire with ohm-meter…..if you have fuel, compression, spark, and engine is healthy=timing correct, etc,,,i dont see why this engine wont start….i beleive in the beggining #3 wire was bad,due to the fact the plug was newish,…scan the OBD port…that would have been the first step…read my sig

I did buy NGK replacements for the wires/plugs…the ones on there before were also NGK. The money I’ve put in it so far have been for tune-up parts except for the coil…before dumping anymore in it, I’m hoping for an idea of what else it could be or check for.
I don’t have a scanner for the OBD port, nor can I get the car to a place than can scan it…I would love to check it though…only option would be to tow it, and that’s more $.
I’m completely stumped…

October 23, 2011 at 11:00 am #441975Given that #3 was ‘clean’ I’m wondering if you have a head gasket issue. If when the engine starts you take the radiator cap off and you have pressure even with the engine cold this may be the cause. Use the info and test in this video to help you make that determination. Also your compression readings are quite low as they should all be up in the 120-150 range but we’ll deal with that after you do a combustion leak test.

I went out to work on the civic today…rented the block tester with some fluid to check the radiator for exhaust gas. Cranked the car and there were no bubbles coming out of the radiator, syphoned some and started to put the block tester to work…only problem was I couldn’t get the car to start for an accurate test, it would just crank and crank.
Starting to get frustrated, I triple checked EVERYTHING, air is great, got fuel pressure to the rail and tested spark…NO problems but it wouldn’t fire!!! I would think even with a bad headgasket it would chug or something like it did before!
Out of frustration, I went in the car and just cranked…and cranked….and cranked…chugging started, I mashed the pedal and it revved to 3k and I let off…I held it there out of disbelief and slowly started to let the gas off. It idled perfectly again at around 1.5k until it warmed up and dropped down to around 700rpms or so. NO hint of the problem before. Let 2 fan cycles happen…took the car out and drove it a good 3 miles, no problems at all…no CEL, nothing. I let the car sit for an hour, went back out and started it with NO trouble. Perfect again.
While all this is great!!!! …it still leaves me wondering…wtf happened?!?! What happened to the low compression test readings and how the hell do you explain that?! Before giving the compression tester back, I did my other 2 cars and they were perfect…odds are it wasn’t user error. The only thing I did was change the coil/cap/rotor/wires/ and plugs…
I’m happy because I feel like it saves me a lot of work, though I can’t explain it and it’s driving me insane. Also, my wife doesn’t trust the car (it’s her daily) and wants a solid answer that I can’t give.

October 24, 2011 at 11:00 am #441977There have been a few posts here regarding an ” engine flooded ” condition. the vehicle won’t run or just barely. the solution was to hold the pedal to the floor and crank away to clear the fuel. sounds like perhaps that was your prob and you cleared it with your pedal mash and cranking.

I would consider doing a fuel injector leak down test and with the vehicle running fine now, complete another dry and wet compression test C8-)
October 25, 2011 at 11:00 am #441979Sounds like it was flooded however it would be nice to know what the cause was. Sometimes Honda’s just flood, it seems they are prone to it. What confuses me about this is the ‘plug readings’, if it was flooded normally they would all be a little wet with gas. You may still have an issue so keep an eye on the temp gauge and if it starts to overheat again, I would do the block test again just to be on the safe side.
