      Hi all,

      I’ve got a 1998 Civic EX sedan with the manual transmission and 139k miles. For 2-3 years now I’ve had a steering wheel vibration/shimmy at highway speeds (typically above 65mph), but applying the brakes doesn’t seem to affect it.

      Here’s the thing, though: It’s not consistent. It comes and goes…some days are much worse than others, and some days I barely notice it at all.

      I’ve had the car checked for suspension integrity several times (ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.), but everyone has told me the front end is rock solid. I also got new tires about a year ago and had them balanced before they were mounted. The car has also had an alignment since then, and the front brakes are in good shape.

      Any other ideas? Is there a chance that I could have a worn CV joint or some other problem, or should I flag the tires for a closer inspection?

      Thanks!
      Ryan

        9 times out of 10, a vibration at that speed is out of balance tires or bent rim. I would rotate the front tires to the back and see if there is a change.

          ++++1 Try the tire rotation.

            +2 😉

            Alternatively, we would go ahead and try straightening a potentially bent iron rim with gentle hammering. If that is not the source of the problem, maybe get the front wheels balanced again.

            What I have seen recently on a 2001 Merc C Class Station Wagon was actually a no noise condition with slight vibration at certain speeds due to a faulty frontal wheel bearing. A new item for me I must admit 😉

              Thanks all…will rotate the tires early this week and see what happens. Will keep everyone updated. 🙂

                Look for a place that does a “road force” balance. It is more precise than a regular balance, and will check for irregularities in the circumference of the rim.
