i have 98 s10 blazer with a 4.3L, automatic transmission with 4×4. my problem is that the car is stuck in 4HI i cannot get it to go into 2HI or even 4LO. i cannot find the problem, i have checked the actuator under the battery and it seems fine. if i disconnect the vacuum line on top of the transfer case its seems to fix it but the 4HI indicator in the dash still stays lit but i also want to have 4 wheel drive when i need it. can someone point me in the direction of what might be the problem? thanks.

I’ve seen those vacuum switches go bad in the past, you might want to check with the service manual for it’s testing because honestly I’m not sure how to test that one but the older models had some issues with those switches going bad and all you needed was a vacuum pump to test it’s operation.

Like Eric stated: The switch in the top of the transfer case gets stuck in the open position. The best way to check it is to remove it and see if the plunger is stuck up inside of the body. If it is, replace it. Also, press on the plunger and see if it returns back to the closed (plunger out) position, if not, replace it. Another common problem is the encoder motor on the side of the transfer case. Go after the vac switch first.

Almost forgot, before you remove the switch, clean off the top of the transfer case where the switch is at to prevent debris from entering the t-case

Thanks for the feedback. It turned out to be a bad transfer case actuator motor i belive its located on the trans case in the back. I had to take it to my local shop so they could test it and sure enough that was my problem.
