My friend has a 1998 Chevy Blazer with about 150,000 miles on it. It was a southern state vehicle so there isn’t a bunch of rust underneath like on the brake lines and such. About a mouth ago he started experiencing a low brake pedal. He insisted it was due to worn front brake pads and asked I change them even though I knew better. I installed the new front brake pads even though he still had almost half pad. Of course after changing hem he had more peddle that day but, the next day the peddle started sinking down low again. I didn’t see any leaks anywhere. The lines, hoses and calipers all around look fine. The rear brake pads are about do to be changed but, I honestly don’t feel that’s causing his issue. I feel its more of a master cylinder issue. There are no ABS lights on and the brakes work just not as effective.

I also wanted to mention that his 4-wheel drive isn’t working. It won’t engage of when it does it gets stuck in 4-hi. I haven’t had time to look into that issue yet. I am thinking it could be that vacuum switch on top of the transfer case or the vacuum actuator under the battery. May even be a weak encoder motor. thanks for reading guys!

Should the fluid never have been changed, I might start there. If it’s not making it to the floor, not losing fluid, then I’d assume either MC, or just condensation as the likely culprits. Changing the fluid is relatively easy and cheap, just takes a bit of time.

Master Cylinder is most likely bypassing. It’s an internal leak between the seals inside.

I have a perhaps dumb question. Did you blead all the wheels? If not, you may simply still have air in the lines. Just a thought.

That sounds very much like a master cylinder issue. Not a bad idea to check the rear brakes though. Pedal feel comes mostly from the rear brakes. More info here.

You might consider starting a new thread for the 4WD issue. I think you might be on the right track by checking the operation of the vacuum switch though.

Good luck and keep us posted.
