I have a friend with a 98 Accord. It’s fairly low mileage (60,000?) and apparently hasn’t been thrashed, only driven by women, no angry teenage racers! She’s getting a lot of CLUNKING from her transmission. It shifts slowly but roughly (It takes a LONG time to shift up, but when it does, it does it roughly) when she goes to accelerate, 1st and 2nd are usually a bit jarring. When she comes to a stop it usually takes a second to go into neutral, and when it does it does it roughly. I’ll admit i still haven’t checked it out myself, so I don’t know if her trans-fluid is topped up or if she’s got any trouble codes but I figured I’d “cast my net” and fish for some answers anyway….

+1 on looking at the CEL to see if any codes are stored.

You could also try changing the trans fluid with Honda OEM fluid only.

If it is a V6 sounds like the tranny is going bad. As stated earlier 98-02 had transmission issues. Honda even extended the warranty on the transmissions, but due to age of car you are pass that coming into play. Definitely have the CEL codes read to get more insight into your problems.

I’d like to add that it is VERY important that you only use Honda transmission fluid in that transmission. In addition you need to check the fluid level with the engine off and the engine warm on level ground, you DO NOT check the fluid level with the engine running. You might start by checking the fluid level and perhaps changing it however by the sound of it you may have a transmission issue. BTW I believe the only transmissions covered under the extended warranty are from 99-03. Here is a video on changing Honda transmission fluid.

I have a 98 accord with 328k on it and it is very clean. I was able to contact the 2nd previous owner and he bought it for his wife to drive to and from work. He bought it in 2000 with 28k on it and his wife drove 100 miles a day for about 13 years, if that even gets close to the 328k, but the maintenance has been maticulous on it through the years. Had 3 timing belts replaced, once each 100k and regular oil changes and kept is spotless inside and out. I picked it up from a guy in town that just bought it a day before I saw it. I didnt know he had paid 900 for it and he also got the factory radio, and 2 17in chrome wheels and tires with it. He turned around and sold it to me for 1500… It shifted a bit hard from 1st to 2nd, and still does, however after driving a couple of blocks it runs perfect, no slipping, grinding, or clunking. Here’s the deal.. The fluid is a bit dark brown, smells kind of burnt, and not sure if this kat tried to remedy the transmission before selling it to me. I am leaning towards replacing the front solenoid pak, which I believe is the linear modules. When I check the codes, I get the TCM A/T Control Module. Do you think replacing these modules might be a good place to start? I have read a lot of forums and was wondering what some of your expertice might bring me in resolving this issue. I want to keep the car as she runs very well.
                Thanks a ton!

What code was it? You could try changing the fluid with the
recommended Honda fluid to see if it helps.
