Okay so I have looked everywhere asked everyone have not seen the same problems with any other scenario. I recently bought a 98 Accord it has a slight transmission issue, start-up, goes into drive and reverse without a flaw. Hold the break hard and floor it rpms go to 2,200 so it doesent slip nor has it ever slipped in a gear. But when shifting between 1st and 2nd (especially when cold) it seams in between gears the power to the engine is not cut it just will revv up. ex. normal driving 1st gear will shift at 3,000 with normal throttle, but if you hold it there without letting off the throttle it will spike to maybe 3600 or some times 4000 and grab second gear hard (and the revv is an open engine revv nothing in the transmission is propelling the car in any direction). it will do this slightly between second and 3rd but thats it. to avoid it basically tranny dropping itself i will let the throttle out a little and it shifts and i get back into the throttle. What I want to know is where to start shift solenoid or fluid, the car is a one owner from New York with 166,000 miles. Now its in Ct with a lot more open stretches and less stop and go. the only other problem is if i roll down from like 40 mph to maybe 8-9 and give it gas it revvs and catches first so ive come to the conclusion its just laggy i can live with it and avoid these issues but i would like to fix them. Help me please.

you could try the honda reccomended 3 X drain and refill … my 99 civic DX auto transmission wasnt shit super smooth and I went to the dealership and I was suprised how cheap the atf dw-1 was .. I live in east KY and figured it would be ungodly expensive I paid like 6.84$ a qt ….. what you do is drain your transmission… the refill it … I like to drive atleast 200 miles then drain it and refill it again .. repeat and repeat … so 3 times total … my 99 civic dx shifts like butter now .. its a hell of alot better …
1 thing I can say is if your fluid wasnt changed for like 100,000+ miles and it comes out pure black it could do more damage to your tranny …. and with what your describing it sounds like your tranny is gonna die sometime so it may not be worth it … just giving you an option that “Could” help for a little bit
I have a youtube link now for the video it will be live in about a half hr. im just curious the fluid level seems to be to high what could this be doing? Your suppost to fill the transmission to the mark inserting the dipstick all the way but it seems to have been filled just being inserted to the bottom of the seal. here is a picture of the fluid to.
LX,I beleive, its a 4cyl 2.3 ULEV vtec with the 4spd/w o/d. fully loaded leather ect… heres the video link go to 3:15 to really see what im talking about.
I’d buy 3 qts. of ATF DW-1 from honda dealership and drain , wipe off magnet on drain plug , and refill to your 98 accord specs … your holds 2.6 qts … if the fluid level is high I would get it to where it should be with some new honda genuine fluid
thanks i guess ill start there, I just want to know what effect the over fill on the fluid could do, could this hide problems or could it affect the way it shifts. Hopefully someone who has a lot of knowledge in these years hondas know. I have heard they all have some problems, but I dont know the extent to this.
I know having too much fluid can be just as bad if not worse than not having enough fluid … 2 fluid levels I always make sure are right are oil and transmission fluid … what to do is when adding go slow and test … u add too much .. you can just pop the drain plug for 2 seconds and bring the level down .. but if its low u can add a tiny bit and repeat and save yourself some major stress
I see Honda transmissions overfilled all the time. It’s mostly due to improper checking of the fluid level. You need to check the fluid level with the vehicle off, not running. Also, using fluid other than Honda fluid can also cause issues.
As for what the overfilled fluid can cause. The higher level can cause the fluid to come into contact with the moving gears. When this happens, the fluid is whipped up and gets loaded with air. If this happens, it’s equivalent to a hydraulic failure.
