So I’ve got a bit of a doosy here. I was given a 97 Isuzu Hombre 2.2L a little over 2 months ago. I tried my hand at finding the issue with it, and came up with nothing. So I had it towed to a mechanic who sat on it for a month and a week, hardly ever worked on it and I ended up just pulling it from him. So I’ve got it back home and I’m tearing into it again.
Let me start off with the basics. The original engine had a blown head gasket in it, so instead of replacing the head gasket. The guy that gave it to me had a buddy of his swap out the engine with a used one he bought from a 97 s10. It’s the exact same engine that was in there to begin with. Now after putting that engine in, they couldn’t get it running. He let it sit for 3 years and then gave it to me.
I’ve gone through all the simple tests and can verify the engine is at least good. Compression is good on all cylinders, and they hardly vary at all. I’ve verified I’m getting spark on all cylinders. I tested the fuel pump, turns out it was bad, so I replaced it. Still had an issue with fuel pressure dropping off too quick, so I replaced the regulator and that fixed that issue. The issue at hand is, it will crank fine, and it’ll usually fire up for 1-2 seconds. Sometimes less than that, and I’ve had it running for at least 3 minutes at one point.
I have tested so much stuff on this truck that it isn’t funny. First off I tested the ICM, all 6 wires. Especially the reference wire which would jump up to 60 hertz at one point, so I replaced the ICM, and that has fixed itself. I’m getting a good crank signal from the crank sensor. I’ve also replaced the PCM with a used one with a guarantee that it was good, and reflashed with my VIN. I’ve bypassed my ignition switch(luckily the truck was made before passlock). It shows an engine light, but the only code I could get off of it was for the crank relearn, because I had replaced the crank sensor because it was $10. My scanner is currently down at the moment, so I haven’t read it since getting it back from the mechanic.
I’m reached a point now where I’m not sure where to go in this troubleshooting. I’d love if anyone had any input or advice.
