Okay, so I’ve just replaced the headgasket(it was fine but something got stuck in the engine cylinder… long story), the timing belt(original job), water pump, valve cover seals, and the radiator. I followed the instructions in Eric’s video on replacing the radiator, however, now the radiator fan won’t come on.

I turned the AC on in the car, and the condenser fan turns on, but not the radiator fan.

Engine temperature gauge in the car seems to be ok( below half point). But the radiator fan hasn’t turned on when it should. Any ideas?

check that everything is plugged in. fuses are good.
relay fully seated. unplug the coolant temp sensor.
bridge the connector with a paper clip. The relay should
make and the fans should come on. if so replace coolant temp
sensor. If not check for 12v right at the fan connector. if 12v
seen.Replace fan. if not wiring or relay issue.

Everything was working as I recall before starting all the work. The needle doesn’t go over the 1/3rd line, but I’ve seen the radiator getting pretty hot and start steaming. I’m afraid to really drive it anywhere, because if the car gets too hot, it could destroy the engine.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo what do you do when you’re stuck in traffic on a hot day, the engine overheats because the fan isn’t working, just before the head gasket blows and the cylinders begin to go to meltdown?
              Eject Eject !!!??

See, I live in Northern Virginia just outside of Washington DC. We have the worst traffic in the nation. Getting stuck in traffic is exactly what I fear.

I totally understand. It’s all that vapor lock spewing from the Congress, and elsewhere.

I checked the fan fuse, it was blown. I turned the car off and put a new fuse in and it blew again. I had just replaced the radiator and timing belt/water pump. Did I miss a ground somewhere? Where is the ground at?

If the fuse blows right away. check power wire. look for a kinked wire
                        or rub through.

You now have a short to ground problem.

With car off disconnect the electrical connector at fan.
                          Replace fan fuse again.
                          Start car.

If fan fuse blows again—ckeck wiring harness from fan connector back
to under hood fuse box. Look for pincked wire or wiring harness.

If fan fuse is good—turn car off and reconnect the electrical connecter at fan.
                          Start car.
If fan fuse blows again—short at fan motor or wiring from fan electrical connector
                          to fan motor.

Do you have an volt/ohm meter ?

Wrench, Go Patriots, I remember when they went to the Final Four, the campus went crazy. My brother was attending there that year. I went to Nova, mostly Woodbridge. Pretty awesome. Know anyone looking to hire a recent graduate with a B.S. in Finance?

College Man, Fuse is blowing right away. I looked for a kink or rubbed through wire, couldn’t find anything. I pulled the fan out and tested it on the coolant fan side, it blew a 15amp fuse, but not a 20 amp fuse(the one it normally uses). I also hooked it up directly to the battery and it worked fine.

This tells me the problem is somewhere before the fan, but where?

Rubflor, The fuse only goes bad when the fan tries to turn on, and the fan is there. If I disconnect the fan, and turn on the AC(to force both fans to turn on), the fuse does NOT blow.

I’m looking at the wiring diagram, It looks like it could be the Engine Colland Temperature Switch A, Radiator Fan Relay, or Radiator Fan Control Module.

Any idea what would be best to look at first, or how I could test and eliminate any of these?

sounds like the fan itself is the problem. When you
ran the fan off the battery was it fused? either amp
the motor or check the fan for short to ground.

I don’T think its the fan. I plugged it into the cooling fan plug, and it did not blow 20 amp fuse. Which tells me it is probably running fine.

Go to http://www.bbbind.com for a wiring diagram.

Wiring diagram shows cooling fan rated for 20 amp fuse.
(Condenser fan is rated for 15 amp fuse).
Install correct 20 amp fuse and test again.

This is a 2.2L engine right.
If 2.7L, both fans are rated at 20 amp .
