Hello all, quick question. My 97 Explorer starts up fine, if I shut it off and try and restart it right away. It sounds like it wants to, but don’t. I’ve waited about 5-10 minutes and then it restarts right away. Any ideas? Thank you for any help.

Hey, Start at the fuel rail and check for pressure . you may smell gas but you could have a fuel pressure problem. If that doesn’t work check your fuel pressure regulator by the vacuum line, If all that fails maybe check the ignition system for spark and test all your coils maybe. hope that works and helps you out.

Yep Yep. Run with the fuel pressure gauge attached to the car, look at pressure should be 65 to 80 or something running. Doesn’t matter that much for testing. Shut the car off, go have a coffee and come back. See if the rail pressure has bled down. If it has, then look for a leak. Fuel injector O rings, or something farther back. Usually the plenum will stink of raw fuel when those ring go bad. There is a regulator with a hose connected to it than can bad as well. Its been awhile for me on these, but I think I had one that would hold pressure for along time (hours). The car will take time to pressure up the fuel system and delay starting if so, and that MIGHT be the problem if its not something else say electrical.

Next time it won’t start hold gas pedal to floor and start if engine starts clean IAC Valve
Also check for spark at that time ignition modules and distributors for those year’s are known for those symptoms good luck
