The automatic tranny on my 96 Integra is starting to shift kinda abruptly and harshly. I changed the fluid but the harshness only got slightly less, and a month later it’s getting harsh again.

Is it practical for a guy to drop out the transmission and rebuild it? The rebuild kits are like $180 and you get a whole mess of clutch plates and o-rings. Doesn’t look quite like rocket science, just a bit complicated.

Can I do it with some tall jack stands and a winch to the garage rafters to hold up the engine?
What are my chances of success?

( I have pulled out and replaced wheel bearings and CV shafts before, so I know I can do that part of it).

        Honestly? I wouldn’t.

Rebuilding one of the auto transmissions requires a lot of specialized tools and if something on the interior of it is so much as a whisker off from true, you’ll have more problems than when you first started.

You’d probably be better served scrapping the trans and putting in a rebuilt from a reputable rebuilder. That way it comes with a warranty… and saves you time. You could probably swap it in and out yourself, saving on the labor, though!

I used to work in a transmission shop years ago and they don;t work very well for “learn as you go”. Like some things you take apart and then upon reassembly you notice it can fit in two different ways but you don’t remember how it looked before coming out. Kind of like when you install a door latch and it will fit two different ways but only one way actually works.

That and getting into the valve body is a complete nightmare if you don;t know what you are doing. This is especially true if check balls fall out and you don;t know where they came from. At that point you are pretty much screwed. Or maybe two seals are the same size but one is different somehow. Which one goes where?

You COULD attempt the job if you get a good book about your specific trans and really study the procedure but even then, have a back-up plan in case you find yourself painted into a corner.

The most important thing – don’t just go getting one from a junk yard. There is a good chance that the transmission is what landed the car in the junker to begin with
