so I have a 1996 Honda civic coupe has a d16y7 in it and is a 5 speed. ok here is my problem and what I have done so far.
I started the car one day drove to the gas station shut it off now it wont turn over. when ignition is on all lights on dash work and fuel pump runs so no issue there. At first when trying to attempt a start all lights would go out and would make on clunk like the starter was engaging but couldn’t turn over engine. I did the turn the crank to be sure engine didn’t lock up and it turns freely so I pushed it to see if I could jump start and it started right up (didn’t have jumper cables at time).
I tested battery once I got the car home and it had 12.7 volts and cca was only about 15 short of what battery calls for so I know it was ok but I bought a new battery anyways cause my truck needed one and the old one from the car starts my truck just fine. I checked my terminals and cables no issue there I even cleaned all my grounds up (terminal and on the car) just to be sure. still nothing. the relay is not making any unusual noise and only clicks when trying to start like normal.
I did check the ignition fuse as well it was a little corroded inside I cleaned it cause it was one of the bigger type fuses you can take apart but haven replaced it yet going to do that this weekend just to be on the safe side. I get the voltage at starter. so I was thinking possible bad starter? but before I waist any money on that I decide to see if the car would start with jumper cables (before replacing battery and after same result) hooked to my truck.
With jumper cable hooked up the car turns over a little slow compared to normal but it will start and run with no issue. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I don’t really want to get a new starter unless it is needed. Plus this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this as far as putting jumper cables on it and starts but only clicks with out them.
