I have a 96 dodge ram that takes a while to start up. When I turn the key to start the car, it should start up in a couple seconds. It takes my car a few seconds for my car to start (about 7-8 clicks). I was wondering what was causing the delay. Is it the fuel pump?

Do you hear the starter turning the engine over at all?
Do you have any problems once it’s started?
Does this only happen at cold or any time you start your car?

A quick test to see if you’re losing fuel pressure/ it’s flowing back into the gas tank is to turn your key to ‘on’ and hear the fuel pump kick on for 2-3 seconds. Wait a couple additional seconds for the line to become pressurized and then try to start your car and see if it starts up any faster.

Your description is hard to understand but I assume its an extended crank issue? The motor turn over fine, but does not fire until an extended crank cycle is introduced? If this is the issue, in most cases, The fuel system should be a suspect especially with dodge products. They use a return-less fuel system. So the fuel regulator in actually in the tank. Basically the system has no fuel available at the fuel rail so therefore the extended start. There should be a fuel port on the rail you can tap into with a standard gauge. Check pressure readings and see if it will hold after you have “keyed up” the fuel system. Good luck

If it’s an extended crank issue you might check to see if your fuel pump is bleeding off pressure after you shut the engine off. You can do this by checking the fuel pressure both while the engine is running and also after you shut it off. It should hold pressure for at LEAST 30 min after you shut the engine off. If it doesn’t, you might have a problem with the check valve in the pump.

cycle the key to on ( but don’t crank ) wait a 3 count then turn off. repeat the cycle on with three count wait 2 more times then immediately try to start. if it fires right up the fuel pump is on its way out. recommend oe pump ( carter is oe for dodge ) napa carries them rebranded as their napa brand.
