I have a 96 Honda Civic Si (D16Y8), manual, 260,000 kms, 20,000 on a rebuilt bottom end. Right now once the car is warmed up, the idle becomes erratic going from 800rpm to 100-200rpm, it will fluxuate and try to recover but more often then not it will stall. The car will continue to start again right away, sometimes with the aid of pushing the throttle a bit. Additionally, there is no CEL and never has been with this car. Within the last week, the symptoms have been getting worse and now un-drivable due to stalling at any short period of idle.

      The diagnosis:
The one item that i have seem to discovered is that when the valve cover breather line is off of the intake the engine runs great with no idle issues. Also noticed if i hold the idle a bit higher the engine doesnt stall either.

      Tried these things to resolve:
-Replaced the PCV value with a OEM Honda part
-Check fuel pressure using ETC1 quick check method, pump primes and there is definite pressure. replaced fuel filter as normal maintenance.
-checked all vacuum lines using throttle cleaner
      -cleaned throttle plate
-have changed IVAC with a known working one
-went over the spark plug lines cannot see cracking or such, they are pretty new MSD performance wires
-plugs are clean and dry, will replace as part of tune up anyways
-cap and rotor look good, no oil or wetness
      -no visible damage to wiring

im at a complete loss why this motor is having issues. When it is running or driving, it runs great. The head is slated to be replaced soon as i seem to get some oil burn on start up occasionally, probably due to worn valve seals. New head is sitting in a box in my closet however i want to fix this issue before introducing more problems.

any ideas is more than appreciated

      thanks,

      cj

Since it starts up again without issues it is not gas related. Is you alternator working and charging the battery?
Have you cleaned your MAF sensor? If not try it.
Could also be your idle motor that needs cleaning or replacement (unless that is what an IVAC is?)

the battery was recently replaced (4 months ago) and i would think that if the alternator wasnt charging the battery would go flat?

im not entirely sure the 96 civic has a MAF, there is a sensor in the intake and i have cleaned it as part of my throttle body cleaning. I will have to research more about a MAF sensor for my motor.

IACV (apparently im dyslexic) – idle air control valve has been changed.

have learned that it is a MAP sensor on honda’s. I have also found the location which is on the top of the throttle body. i will try removing and cleaning it with throttle cleaner…

took the sensor off and cleaned it, wasnt gummed up or anything that was visible. ran the motor without the sensor and plugged the hole with my finger and idle was higher but even. put sensor back in and issue continued. checked voltage at red/grn to ground was about 3.65v, wasnt able to back probe sensor so when to ecu instead, got a 2.65v. started the car and at 1000rpm the sensor was reading about 1.35v until stalling started and then voltage went to 1.9v and quite erratic. hitting throttle resulted in a 0.88v until i took my foot off the gas.

i feel like this may be the issue but throwing a map sensor at the problem without knowing forsure feels wrong. any ideas?

Check the fuel pressure and compare the pressure you have actually measured to what the factory specification is. You may actually have some pressure but it may not be enough to keep the vehicle running. Yes, you may hear the pump running but if it’s only producing xx psi and you need yz psi for it to rum properly then you need a new pump.

so turns out that the ignitor pickup in the distributor has a crack. didnt notice it on first look over but now noticed some carbon buildup. going to replace the distributor and see if that fixes the issue or at least gives me a start into fixing the issue.
