      Hi there,

my car is a 96 Civic EK3 MT.
the check engine light is not on but i believe there are some codes set and would like to retreive them.
i followed the video from Eric and tried to use a loop to short the 2 pins of the service connector and turn the key to On(II). the check engine light stays on instead of flashing(long and short as shown in the video).
if i remove the loop, the check engine light goes off.
does anyone know why i cant get the codes or does it mean there are no codes at all?

recently i got a small obd2 scanner but its 16 pins while the connector in my car is 3-pin.
is there a way to make an adapter by myself or it has to be purchased somewhere in shops?

      helps are greatly appreciated
I’m new here and nice to see you all.

      Thanks!

      Wayne

If the engine light stays on when the connector is jumped no
        codes are stored.

+1, that means that no codes are stored. There is a 16 pin connector. I believe it’s on the passenger side of the console just under the glovebox. If not there, you might check behind the ash tray.

            Thanks College man and Eric!
i will take a look behind the central console in the coming days.

by the way, my car is JDM and some says it doesnt have that connector even it was built in 1996.
hope its not true or my obd2 reader will simply be useless.. 🙁

Have a 99 Civic, so it should be the same as mine. (96-00) My obd connector is on the driver side, just to the right, and up, from the hood latch. You can goto most auto parts stores, and they will read the code for free (and help you find the connector).

Wow, you have nice stores there. When I went to a shop to pull out my ABS codes, they would charge 14,65€ without a tax just for connecting it to the computer and pulling out the codes. I laughed a lot. Especially when I ordered the OBD reader for half the price the same day.

                Sorry for OT

                  no luck…..
tried all locations suggested and nothing found.
                  thanks for all help anyway!

It really should be around the hood latch, did you search really thoroughly?

Think that is an OBD1 engine. So that would explain why you can’t find the ODB2 connector. D16y7 and D16y8 are ODB2.

                              someone said its OBD2.

i googled it and found several people asked whether this engine can be run with OBD1 ECU. so probably its using OBD2.

There is such a massive amount of confusion surrounding this engine, mostly because of the confusion with the OBD1 D15B (Maybe the “engine naming guy” at Honda Japan wasn’t there that day?), and because of the complexity of the entire system.

You can mix and match, engines and OBD systems, using adapters, and some custome wiring. Which ECU do you have?

The engine is OBDII. Thing is, the ABS is not a part of that system during those years. I don’t know on European models but you can often get the ABS codes by looking at the flashing LED on the ABS computer. It may be located near the right side arm rest in the rear seat if you have a hatch (there’s a small plug you can remove), or you can remove an access panel in the trunk to see the LED. Just turn the key to the ON position and the LED should begin the flash the code. Even though it’s just an LED flash, the codes are the same as if you were looking at a flashing ABS light.

Good luck and keep us posted.
