      Hi all,

my car has some intermittent shifting issue. if I drive it without going to 5th gear, it works all the time and smooth even for weeks or months. but once it went to 5th gear and go back, sometimes the stick cant move left and right smoothly. I even need to rock it to the left if I want to go 1/2 and right to 5/R.
I heard a lot that people have difficulties to get in gears with different reasons but mine is just having problem on LEFT and RIGHT. once I rocked it to the left, it can go 1/2 smoothly as it was. same to 5/R.

normally when this happens, I need to shake it between 5 and neutral many times. once it back to normal, I can drive with 1-4 gears all day long without problems.

its irritating on highway as 4th gear cant reach high speed with low rev. I will try replacing MTF but not sure if its the cause because 1-4gears work perfectly if I don’t go into 5th. checked bushings on the linkage and all are ok. or something in the tranny is broken causing this problem?
      thanks a lot for advises!

Dont know alot about insides of a manual but it may… be a synchro ring or theres a gate kinda thing in them eg: that prevents you from going straight from 5th to reverse its just physically not possible even when the car isnt running but as soon as you put it back into neutral you can go to reverse no problem sounds a bit like that

              Hi college man,

i read that before so i checked the bushings but found that it wasnt the cause of blocking. i reproduced the issue then disconnect the lever and the linkage, i couldnt turn the shift rod clockwise.
something wrong inside the transmission but im not familiar with the internals even with the bible /_. i cant find similar cases from google either ..

                Hi Yavion,

so something probably loose inside and it works when i knock it back to the correct position?

could be im not exactly sure what courses that to happen though haha i just know that it does it, it could be a special synchro ring on 5th gear =o or the fact that reverse isnt sycrhonised at all or the shift fork on the selectors

If it’s not the linkage as you state, then it’s likely an internal issue. If you’re not familiar with servicing manual transmissions I would recommend removing it yourself but taking it to a transmission shop to be rebuilt. This will save you some labor cost. OR you could get a salvage transmission and install it yourself with a new clutch. This is not a common problem in my experience and it’s likely you have broken hard parts in the transmission. Those parts can be expensive, more expensive than a replacement transmission. One last note. Be sure to only use Honda transmission fluid in that transmission. Use of other fluids can damage the transmission. More info here.

Good luck and keep us posted.

its bad that here in Hong Kong, we dont have an owned car park. it means its kinda public area and we pay monthly rent to reserve the slot. i cant leave the car unfinished and go with the transmission. if i get an used transmission somewhere, is there a quick way to verify the its condition? i worry that i will get one that is worse than mine. Even mine, if i take it out and do some benchshiftings, it might still work perfectly…

thanks a lot for the advises and you guys are always very helpful as usual 🙂

Honda manual transmissions don’t often have issues so it’s likely the one you get will be good. There is no way to verify that to my knowledge however. See if you can purchase a transmission with some sort of warranty. Most salvage yards give you at least 30 days on parts that you purchase.

Just make sure to fill it with Honda fluid when you get it in.

Good luck and keep us posted.

i dont have experience on taking out the transmission but i will definitely give it a try. i read the service manual and it mentioned a lot of things have to be taken out before i can drop the transmission. i watched a lot of videos including the one you replace the drive axle. it looks like i dont really need to loose the axle nut if i just want to take out the transmission. if i understand correctly, i could just remove the cotter pin, get the ball join loose and pry out the axle with the rotor and caliper on? or i will not have enough room for the axle to move away from the transmission if i do in this way? im not very experience so would like to get it done with minimal removal :). Thanks !

It’s really not that bad. One of the easier clutches to do in my opinion. In fact I have a VManual on replacing a clutch on an Integra which is very similar to your Civic. You might consider it to help you with the job.
