      Heya,
      my truck’s turn signals have been acting more and more demented over the last few weeks;
some times they work, sometimes they don’t, and sometimes they flash a couples of times then nuthin’.
I can do some basic wrenching, but when it comes to electrical I’m lost…
      any ideas?
      Thanks,
      Wolf.

Sound like your turning relay is a little weak/old I had similar issue like urs. My didn’t work sometimes and sometimes here was some delay changed relay never had an issue again…. Not sure of location in your vehicle most have them on the fuse box or under the dashboard (most common)

I would check the turn signal flasher under
the dash. if you turn on the flashers do all
          four outside bulbs flash?

I would check out the previous suggestions first, but short of that, check to see if your four way flasher switch is broken or loose. It simply pushes into place on the steering column. I had one break inside and jiggle around, throwing my signals off…they had a mind of their own.

The multifunction switch on these vehicles are prone to failure. It’s one assembly with your wipers, cruise (if equipped) and signals. I’ve had a few go bad (I own 4 different ’96 Chev K1500s and K2500s)

Check your relay before anything else.

Thanks folks, now I have a place to start looking.
Oh, and yes, my hazard lights do work.

If your hazard lights work but the turn signals don’t I would lean towards the multi function switch or a short in the wiring.

                  Thanks Scott,
is it a pain-in-the-a## to replace myself?

It’s not to bad but not the funnest. Here is a video I found that should give you an idea of what all is involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkt9tfgJFdI

To me it sounds like it might be the cancel part of the turn signal switch isn’t working. This could be due to a mechanical issue or the switch itself. You may need to remove the steering wheel to get a closer look.
