Hey ETCG -my first post !

First my thanks for your great site, I just bought this 95 Ody and it has 200K+ miles (335K in KM-Canada eh). Searching your site for help with rough idle lead me to approach this “without throwing parts at the problem”. The front of the engine and tranny was covered with oil sludge and removing valve cover to look at gaskets revealed shot spark plug tube gaskets ( Spark plugs swimming in oil too !). Now all nice and clean and sporting new gaskets, she is running great. I plan to check the wires, cap in the dark for arching. I will then do a Valve lash adjustment and a Honda PCV just as preventative maintenance.

This starting bang/thud has me stumped, I have searched everywhere for it with no luck. It is like at the last second as the starter disengages it misfires/bangs/thuds. This is worst when it is cold. I tried video taping it but all the noise of the engine starting up and you can’t hear it. I just thought I might try video in drivers seat as that is where I hear it, this may isolate it. In the meantime I will see what ideas I find here.

For my video search “95 Honda Odyssey cold start noise-part 1” just in case someone can hear it better than I.

any idle or running issues at a cold start with a modern engine i would suspect some sort of temp sensor, but your start up almost sounds normal, seems to run ok after the fact… even hard to tell there is a noise.

Try filming with the camera pointing at the exhaust… if there is going to be any choking at start up you are going to hear it at the exhaust.

Honestly, I didn’t hear anything unusual. This is going to sound weird, but I noticed you are in a covered/enclosed parking structure. Perhaps the noise you’re hearing is an acoustic echo of the van starting.

I will try that, Thanks. And yes it does run great, and later when warm this noise is less noticeable

Found it ! It was the ac compressor on its way out-now seized, broke belt now in Mechanics hands. And BTW it runs very nice without that ac comp noise. I ran the ac one day for a couple of minutes to see if it was cold (just bought it Aug 1-pretty sure it had that noise from day 1) I don’t know if that fried it but apparently running a ac without coolant which is the oil of that “engine” will fry the comp.
