      Hello everyone,

got an issue on my 1995 Gmc. Its a 1500 4×4 with 226,xxx miles.

Recently I have heard a clinking noise coming from the rear/passenger of the truck, sounds like its underneath, while putting on brakes. I figured something inside one of the drum brakes was messed up, and that I would get to it eventually and pull the wheels and drums just to check and make sure everything is okay.

Now my senses that its a drum brake problem are fading fast. Now the problem is getting worse, and it happens now when I have my foot on the accelerator and cruising at speeds any where from 30-50mph. When I let out of the throttle, it stops. Some times I can bump the throttle a litle bit and will hear it again. Then just as before, when I apply the brakes, I Hear it again.

It sounds as if some one is hammering on metal.

I have been on the internet and some say it could be a bad carrier bearing (or center support bearing for the drive shaft).

Any of you have any thoughts as to what my next steps should be to diagnose the problem?

      thanks

Ok, now if you are wanting to do this yourself, its time to put the rear up on jackstands, take both rear wheels off, do a thorough exam of the brakes, see if the rear wheel bearings are leaking or axles have excessive play. Check your u-joints and if your truck has a carrier bearing, check it. Look at the differential yoke for oil leaking or if its loose. Spin the axles, Any noise from the differential, roughness? Check the fluid level in the differential while you are at it. Good time to see if the u-joints have grease fittings also.

Thank you for the advice. I will definitely look into this. I’m waiting for a warm and dry day to get to this since its been so cold and wet around here recently.

          I’ll keep everyone posted.

It’s not an easy one, but those are known for the leaf spring shackle bolt to grind an oval hole in the frame. Resulting in bolt movement and metal clunk. I don’t really know what “clink” is, but that bolt will do metal on metal clunk.

thanks for the reply. That makes perfect sense, however now the noise comes when I’m at cruising speeds between 45-60mph. Then when I let off the accelerator, it stops. Foot back on accelerator and the noise comes back. Then sometimes, when braking and coming close to a stop, the noise comes back and then stops again once the truck comes to a stop.

              got to love intermittent noises….

Still been way to cold to look into this too deeply. I was at the gas station this weekend and decided to look at the leaf spring shackles. Looks like the bolts are clear from the frame.

At least this issue has been ruled out.

update for everyone on this issue. sorry for the late reply.

The issue ended up being u-joints. both the front and rear joints on the drive shaft were absolutely shot. Replaced joints and issue is resolved.

I was able to determine the issue by some advice from a friend. He told to me to check the joints after a drive. If they are very hot to the touch, they are no good. Drove about 5-10 miles and checked the joints…almost burned my hand from the heat.

                  Hope this helps!
