95 firebird problem

      I have a 95 firebird v6 that will run rough. I can crank it and the engine shaking real bad also it will only go up to 3000-3500 rpms. It accelerates slow. To keep it running I have to have my foot on the gas pedal. Do any of you know what could be causing this problem?

        It could be a lot of things so read through Eric’s troubleshooting guides and develop a strategy to try to easy things first. Check the timing, and adjust as needed. Do you have any engine codes. Not sure but presume you have OBD-1 in that car but it can still be checked. A code can help you narrow down the potential problems. Look for vacuum leaks (Eric has great videos on how to do that). Check your spark plugs and wires – in fact, check the main wiring to and from the battery – look for a bad ground. If you don’t use the vehicle that much, put in some fresh gas. If it were me, I’d also add some “gas dry” to get any condensation out of the tank. See if that engine has timing belt (versus chain). If belt has it been checked lately? Chains can cause problems but belts are much more prone to problems if not replaced every 100,000 miles or so. Do the simply things first. It may be a more serious issue BUT let’s don’t spend a lot of money unless we have to. Good luck.

          For some reason I think it’s a compression issue. I know it has a vaccine leak somewhere but it hasn’t caused the car to run rough. It’s just an extra car.

            If it is compression issue then it’s a much bigger problem. Check the compression and if you find a leak, then do a leak down test to tell more. Eric has videos on that too. Good luck.

              It could have a dozen problems but it sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check for broken or split vacuum hoses.

              Next thing to do would be a power balance test by removing each spark plug wire in turn with the engine running to see if all cylinders are contributing by the sound of the engine. I suggest to loosen the wires first and then remove them with insulated pliers to prevent yourself from getting zapped. You can also check for spark at the same time.
