        Hi Layne,

Do you have an OBD2 scan tool? If so, and the scan tool connects to the communication port on the vehicle, is your key in the “on” position before attempting to read the codes? Keep us posted.

          Welcome to the forums!

Does the scan tool power up when connected? If not, check your fuses. You should have 12v on pin 16.

95 for GM was a cross over year for OBD so you may need a scan tool that you can manually enter the vehicle information on for it to communicate.

          Hope this helps!

I was about to suggest the same as that year is not OBDII and it may require that you use some other means to get the code. I almost think that all you need to do is turn the key to ‘on’ and look under the passenger seat for the blinking lights but I don’t remember for sure.

Thanks for the welcomes and responses guys. It powers on when plugged in, then it thinks for a while, then can’t communicate. It has the 4G64 I think and it has a headgasket failure. The owner put some moroso all weather seal in it and it still burns coolant. The E fans dont come on either; I was hoping it would come up on the check engine light.

I’d also like to add the customer wants this done as cheap and quickly as possible, so I was wondering if I can pull the head without removing the distributer or any of the valvetrain.

I honestly don’t remember on that set up if you need to remove those items or not, I don’t think it’s a big deal if you do but if your customer wants it ‘cheep’ it may not be possible, you need to be compensated for your time after all and head gaskets are not ‘cheep’ jobs, in order to be done properly you need to make sure you use quality parts and that the repair is done properly, there really is no way around this unless you want to eat your labor.

                    +1 on Eric’s post.

I would not cut corners to bring the cost down either. Just explain the importance to the customer of using the quality OEM parts as well as the time it will take to repair the issue.
