I have a 1995 Civic 1.5l SOHC, automatic sedan. The car will start for 1-2 seconds then shut off. I replaced the ignition switch, with the same result. I don’t believe it to be temperature related, since it was in the 90s when it started and in the high 60’s- mid 70’s this week. Would it be the IAC? Something distributor related (ICM, coil)?

I believe it’s getting gas, if I hold the key all the way forward in the start position the car will run off of the starter. I an unable to check the right way currently because it is storming out right now. But, I do believe it is getting spark and fuel.

Those are the classic symptoms of a bad ignition switch. Try holding the key toward the crank position to see if it will continue to run, if it does replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch. It’s a very common problem on Honda’s of that vintage.

I’ve tried holding the key forward and it stays running. Then, I replaced the whole assembly (lock cylinder/ switch/ harness) and same result. Would that be the main relay?

You only needed to replace the electrical portion, not the entire assembly. The main relay would cause a no start not a start stall in my experience.

Just out of curiosity does it stay running when you hold the key to the run position now after you’ve replaced the switch?

I couldn’t find just the electrical part for some reason. I put a new main relay in last night after work and it started right up and kept running. And, yes it would stay running when I’d hold the key in the run position.

Now there is a hissing noise, like a speaker is turned up really loud with the white noise under the dash. It’s only when the car is turned off (key out of the ignition). Any ideas what that would be or what to start messing with?

That sounds like the ignition switch contacts are not making complete contact. I would replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch and recheck for your symptoms. I suppose it’s also possible that the new switch was not installed correctly which could possibly be causing the problem.
