      Make: Honda
      Model:civic Dx
      Transmission: manual
      Miles:186,xxx

I have a 1995 Honda Civic Dx and i was checking down the engine and took off the distributor cap to inspect for proper performance and disscovered an decent amount of oil in the bottom side of the distributor cap. now keep in mind its not so much oil that the car fails to run but definitely is an issue.. does anyone have any ideas on how to go about fixing this? i read on a couple forums to change the dizzy o-ring, which im pretty much going to do anyway but is there anything that i am missing as a strategy? like a gasket needing to be replaced or i need a whole new distributor? (which i cant see it being that as the car still runs. please any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

First thing i’d do is change the o-ring and if that doesn’t work then the seal on the shaft in the distributor is probably worn. If it gets to that point where the o-ring doesn’t solve the issue then go to a wrecker and pick up another distributor on the cheap if you can.

+1 Absolutely, the internal distributor seal is leaking not the external one.

Here is a guide on how to replace the internal seal:

You’re going to have to go hunting on ebay for that seal, its not sold anywhere else I don’t think.

You could replace the seal and in my opinion it’s more difficult then what’s been said here. I would recommend you find a used one. Avoid an aftermarket replacement as those seem to cause a lot of issues.

Its actually really easy to replace the internal seal, took me 10 minutes. That guide I linked tells you how to do it.

Here is the only place I know to get them, Ebay:

                  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Acura-Distributor-Seal-O-Ring-2-pc-Set-Made-in-Japan-/150912683910?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AHon

Its not difficult at all and will save you over 200$.

What you may not realize is that the seal may not be the problem. Honda distributors are famous for the bushings going bad which leads to seal failure. If you just replace the seal you may not solve the problem if the shaft does not stay centered during distributor rotation. Most times you would also need to replace the bushing as well as the shaft to ensure a lasting repair.
