My daughter’s LeSabre needs this fixed to pass safety inspection. The Haynes Guide says you need to remove the steering rack to just replace the bellows boot. Yesterday I had the wheel off to service the brakes, though, and it looks to me like the boot is reasonably accessible from the side and top wiithout having to remove the steering rack. Have any of you guys done these boots on the 95 LeSabre? Is it true I can replace them without lowering the subframe and removing the steering rack? Or would this apprach open a can of worms? Any insight appreciated, as always!

You do need to take the outer tie rod and jam nut off so an alignment would be needed, but you can change the bellows without pulling the rack. You’ll need to break the steel band clamp off the inside end of the boot. I usually just hit them with a long screwdriver and a hammer at the crimp. Then install the new boot with a really long zip tie to keep the boot attached to the rack. Get that zip tie wrapped around the boot before you go in. Space is limited for human size hands. Try to put a witness mark or count your threads while removing the outer tie rod so you can get the tie rod about where it was before you go for an alignment.

Great. Thank you for the feedback.

And the idea about prefitting the large zip tie is a GREAT idea.
