For those not following my adventure I’ll bring you up to speed then post plans: 94 Mustang GT 5.0 HO that I got very used but with “only” 134,000 miles on her. Had a serious miss and low power when I bought her. Had friend (a real mechanic) check codes, change plugs, fix (something) inside distributor, change fuel filter, and check compression. Later had him clean TPS. I cleaned other sensors, changed oil (two times now), cleared air filter and cold air intake, changed plugs. Found really bad vacuum line along firewall and had friend mechanic change that. Then I found vacuum leak at cruise control (so I just plugged that line – future project to check that out more). Today, installed new distributor cap and rotor, and new coil. Miss is gone – power, well something still lacking there. Pulled passenger trim panel to see if prior owner(s) had added a chip to computer – it seems to have never been touched from factory. So did nothing on that. Reset computer (disconnect battery for 10 minutes), then would not start. Checked everything and decided maybe new coil not connected right. Changed that a little and she fired right up. Have started her a number of time now and starts and runs good – but still not great. Eric and others have suggested replacing TPS. It’s hard to get to so will have mechanic do that, plus have him recheck timing and see if retarding or advancing the timing manually at distributor helps or hurts (note: MINOR advancing or retarding only – I understand computer may override that anyway). May drive it for a while before doing anything new. Oh, and now it’s leaking coolant at overflow tank – makes it all “fun.”

Decided to slightly advance timing on my own. I’ve got the proper tool so loosened bolt, and advanced it slightly. Made it worse. So loosened bolt and tried to turn it back – and it would not budge. Finally got it to move a little. Runs ok again. But that idea turned out to be a bad idea. And it was all MY idea. Ok, well, I’ll get adjusted when I have my friend (the real mechanic) change the TPS sensor.

Got the timing reset (did it myself – woohoo). Ok, it’s back to running pretty good. Still not right considering my 66 with a 6 would out accelerate it. But driveable for sure. Ordered a code reader (only $25) and code book ($.98 plus $2.99 shipping – seems backwards doesn’t it). Only codes I see on dash are temporary codes for misfire but I want to see what reader finds. May get a TPS next time I get a good discount offer from local parts store (waiting for the “wemissyou” email). One good thing: I got my Eric t-shirt from CafePress today (it will “stay dirty!”)

Tweaked timing again today and have it about right. It would beat the 66 right now. Went to 50th Anniversary Mustang show at Charlotte Motor Speedway and got discount flyer so ordering the TPS tonight. Neat show – Ford doing it up right. I imagine Vegas show just as good or better. Got to see 2015 Mustang in person – I like it. Yes it has changed but there is no doubt it’s still a Mustang.

Be careful moving the timing. You can actually damage the engine if you get it wrong. Keep us posted and good luck.

Thanks. Yep, I probably retarded it to much (I had advanced it slightly to see if that helped. All power went away, so I finally got the distributor to move but probably moved it too much so increased retard, and that was really bad. So tweaked it back up and seems good now. Got a TPS to replace the one in car now. May try to replace myself but the #!#!@! screws are partially blocked (so you should take another sensor off the throttle body before you take off the TPS). But I may try a couple of things since the sensor blocking the removal of the TPS is really hard to take off (hidden screws). Also, my FORD OBD1 code reader showed up so (since it’s raining again) will read up on how to use it and then read the codes (when the rain stops). Checked the oil (before rain) and still clean with no signs of gas or antifreeze, and oil level staying up. And regarding the rain, ALL weather services keep calling for sunny days just one or two days out but it RAINS, AGAIN! (OK, someday I’ll lament that we have not had rain for 30+ days but that has not been the case in a year or two now). California – I’d send it to you if I could.
